Its recommended in a VR4 to gap to .7-.8 not the 1.1 :wink:

actually every spark plug catalogue and every owners manual and every workshop manual i have read roccomend the 1.1mm gap for the vr4 :lol:

The following pertains specifically to vr4's but may also apply to other models.

If you are running NGK BPR6ES plugs, gapped to 0.7mm or so and start getting a misfire at high rpm (even if running standard boost), try a set of NGK BPR7ES plugs, again gapped to 0.7 mm. These are one heat range colder and may fix the problem (did for me anyway).

unless you are running more than 10psi of boost or are getting niggling misfires or melting electrodes off the plugs, then I would start looking at some colder plugs.

i use the bp7e plugs that have a v groove in them and find them very good. gapped to .8 i never have trouble even at high boost levels.

for a turbo mirage 1.5 go for one mark cooler plug gapped to the .7 .8 like the other turbo cars.

A quick run down of the part numbers. Each letter or number has significance in the NGK part number, but the same letter may hold a different meaning depending on where it is placed. Here is a rundown of our part number:

Here's a typical NGK spark plug part number: BPR6EVX-11.

B Thread diameter = 14 mm
P Construction = Projected Insulator Type
(K) Construction = Hex size 5/8 in, projected tip
R Construction = Resistor Type
6 Heat Rating Number = 2 Hot -> Cold
E Thread Reach = 12.7 mm
S Firing End Construction = Standard 2.6 mm diameter center electrode
(VX) Firing End Construction = High performance platinum
(K) Firing End Construction = 2 ground electrodes
(N) Firing End Construction = Special side electrode
(-11) Gap Width = 1.1 mm (0.044 in)

Hey,

Just wanted to pass on a bad experience from the weekend with Platinum Plus plugs from Bosch. In a 4G93t, the spark got blown out at about 4500rpm @15psi, complete ignition break down. I closed the gap to see if it made a difference ( I know you shouldn't play with the gap on these types of plugs, but I was desperate for some track time) a smaller gap around 0.6mm and it got better, but not by much, I got to about 5000 and 16psi. Quickly getting the shits on, a mate who had dropped in to watch the session, offered to go to SCA and grab me some cheap $4 NGK's.

End result:
$84 Platinum Plus plugs = Don't work over 15psi

$16 NGK BKR6E = Car can make 20psi through to 7200rpm

I changed the plugs when I did an engine and box oil change, 'cause I figured it was the right thing to do. The old plugs are Iridium's. I have kept them so they will be going back this week.

Whats going on then? Is this common knowledge and I just missed the thread?
