Hi All,

I thought I'd capture my journey here with this car (although not a 4G).

Plans are to get it back to its former glory. Stock freshen up. 13second factory vehicle.

Basically it is a twin turbo 6 with a 6 speed manual transmission. Active exhaust from factory also. Dead stock.

What needs doing.

Transmission swap (originally sold to me with a broken trans when I bought it).

Rocker cover gaskets (oil leaks).

Replace all external seals.

Replace clutch

Clean injectors

Replace sensors.

Now. For those who have played with this platform, it is quite difficult. No room for hands or tools, cost of parts are high due to rarity of vehicle. Everything needs to come from USA, NZ, UK or Japan. Not much Australian support.

The engines are great but expensive to build unlike the 4G.

These cars are also heavy!

Anyway, enjoy my journey with his machine.... 4b4cef593dfb5a5ade3b46126e0a1786.jpg005c74f52a4c33d32ca37c7f3d9ac054.jpg5b28a707334e5c2167ad0c7f6ba8d7e2.jpg9b847db9606d0f9f3eccbd9c979c1808.jpg

Some photos before I got right into it...

Note plenty of extras in comparison to the early Galants, Evos and GSRs. Lots of Shields, brackets and reinforcement.

It is easy to understand where the extra weight came from... 6b63a82d8be341a7866922453c669941.jpg7b183e1878a6cc118a271c1c520f2cee.jpgd01c4cd53478dc4cb09a39581064abfb.jpg962ffefbc6f44f477e00229db75d77f8.jpg

Stripping the bottom side of the engine bay.

Exhaust front pipe dropped.
Transfer removed.
Intercooler piping and all other connections removed

Note extra brackets that tie the transmission to the engine block.

The most noticeable difference with the 4G cars and this is that this car has lots of dowels to align brackets etc. Example, intermediate shaft for passenger side axle. 2 dowels and 3 bolts as opposed to the Galants 2 bolts only.

Little things like this is great but I can quickly comprehend why mitsubishi probably didn't push this vehicle as a race platform. It would be a nightmare to do any mechanical work on this car in time critical situations...

Note. Getrag 6 speed transfer case vs my Galants upgraded transfer case (tmz built). a7cc0436147c94fc085e4dbbff8401d4.jpg2ee9881392eef17f30b1d8cb8aeee1a6.jpg32fe5e7353ff76c2c22a0a2171f6fa7c.jpgfdbbda95771689021e896061da31a9d3.jpg

Engine loom disconnected!

The crank angle sensor plug gave me grief. 1 hour alone on this plug. I found out it was installed incorrectly by whoever put it back. This prevented me from unplugging it. I was tempted to cut it up grateful I didn't.

Can you see the power steering pump bolt? 4th photo. This out needed some improvisation. I had to connect a slide hammer to a spanner to loosen this bolt. No space meant no leverage. 1 hr down the drain.

Last bit that kicked my butt. The rear engine mount bolt. This was done up so tight and with zero room to turn a ratchet I lost about 2 hours I reckon on this.

In the end, I needed to remove the dump pipe, heat shield and ask my Dad to help me turn the breaker bar while I held the socket and extension on the nut behind the block... Made me want to burn the car...

Anyway, the nut was rooted by whoever originally installed it..

Photo 1. No room from beneath.
Photo 2. Finally out!
Photo 3. Nut with destroyed spring washer.
Photo 4. Empty bay
Photo 5. 6g72 out!

So, got some new gaskets, replacement flywheels, hardware and a power steering rack. The existing one requires a rebuild.

Freshen up currently in progress.

I'll keep you posted as I progress. b4bcc866d80ab0d60a881106c5332142.jpgb1138413c107bfa5b1a634d24be900ea.jpg4799e3d214725bf490c5da9fd2d91cf4.jpg6d2393c8a541c6ed7a0bfba9181c72de.jpg34f9d71cc83d8a431740130543c12009.jpg7c01f6e845d750d00bab1191b8fa2ecb.jpg9ae864054fbcd4b6170ba6bff85ba74e.jpge83136c3e67bb9724e433eda72cb5c36.jpgf7b40cce3ffa89ae132235dc75fad401.jpg00127dd9a3f010260a6c847aab2b9020.jpg56c33ad5d06af21ef9d3562c97c9aba3.jpgec75a28bf732f9fffe1dc270474cd1c2.jpga310e0b66d4bec37408c87522c80ff25.jpg40c926be1de3d85371864c1a4d7148a9.jpg

So, off came the thermostat housing last night. Changing the o rings. Evidence of water without coolant in this engine. Overall I think it may have been caused by a leak somewhere so I hope to pressure test and replace all o rings and seals before reinstall.

I'll try and clean / flush as much as possible with the engine out also.

So much more work compared to the 4g. So many bolts. So many hoses. So unfamiliar with this motor. Good times.... ba562b095665d5e14ccd0bde49148e15.jpgc4a29d55cfee55194a5684b4821bbe30.jpg8fd83cd906ed7ad4ba80100dc28f3ea4.jpg4634eb55fb5902dd3d8fb10b1259197c.jpg5412d0426fa8f96b5625413ad3d5849d.jpg

Looks a little like the old pajeros with dohc.  they were north south at least but still a prick to work on.

I would love to own one of those and have considered purchase through out the years...but most of the ones in Pert are trashed. While I would like to drive them...I wouldnt own one if I have to work on it.

BRIAN
Black evo 1 full road rego and done properly/legally

I have heaps of parts...but never the one I need.

Your a brave man Baz, I had a twin turb 300zx and that scared me off the v6 tt's for a while, all the extra hoses for the cold climates meant all or nothing get changed when 1 lets go,
Will be good to see what ya do, getrag is a good start though!

EVO300- might be getting another 6g confused but didnt the 6g75 have shitty cranks?

Just had a quick look around on google and by the looks of it, it was bearings/ main bolts that were the issue, and was probably something to do with high milage and poor service history or throwing boost into it... which in stock form no real n/a engine will like.
