So I had the ECU unplugged the other day and after I plugged it back in the car decided it didn't want to start when cold, it will crank fine but won't start unless you depress the accelerator pedal a bit, then it coughs and splutters into life. Nothing was changed mechanically when the ECU was unplugged. I'm thinking Idle Speed Controller? Suggestions?

Remove isc from tb and reattach wires, flick key on and off. Nose of isc should move in and out. If its just wiggling in one spot or clicking, you have problems.

Managed to get the ISC off, when you move the key to the on position the nose retracts a few millimetres and stays there (turning it off makes it move back to it's starting position) , doesn't wiggle or click.

Had to take off a couple of bits of my intercooler piping and inlet to get to those 8mm bolts haha, still won't start properly, takes a good 15 seconds of cranking for it to cough into life

I use a little tiny ratchet that takes those 6mm bits and a mag tip 8mm driver bit.

while car is cold

unplug battery neg.

depress brake

switch on headlamps

switch ign to on postion...then start pos and hold a few seconds.

having completed the above... stand on left foot while hopinging a circle...no more tha five hops to complete the circle and must chant loudly "I LOVE CATS THAT SPEAK RUSSIAN" repeatedly and wave hands and and arms to imitate a windmill at the same time.

do this for five minutes and fuck all will change ....but your neigbours and parents will think you are odd.

reconnect battery...start car and see if there is an improvement.

no improvement? Burn car claim insurance....buy one of mine. at least one of us wins!!

Oh and btw ...Im pissed as a newt and my boss in melbourne is a fuckwit.

Well, tried the battery negative thing, made no difference, even tried hopping around in circles, still no luck. was reading about how some of the DSMs get this issue when some O ring in the fuel pump goes bad so it doesnt keep pressure in the rail over long periods of time. So I cranked it for 10 seconds or so (didn't start) then pulled the plugs to smell the bores, couldn't smell any petrol. Attempted to get the fuel pump cradle out but that hard line is a bit of a bitch so I couldn't.

so now it doesnt run at all?

can you hear the pump running when you turn the key to start for half a second and release? It should run for about four seconds then stop.

Crank it for a bit and then crack your FPR to see if there is any pressure in the rail. Least that will tell you if it's fuel system.

Undo the chassis rail connection first. Then do the hardline in the vice on the bench

HAHAHAHA LOL @ hopping in circles...

I started reading it and was like.. "depress brake etc etc, ooh this is a method I'm not aware of.." then got to the bit about hopping... paused, re-read it...  .....

Right. well.

Swapped the FPR for some sard regulator with a gauge on it that was in the parts box, which turned out to be a waste of time because the gauge was fubar, but there's definitely pressure because the FPR starts to get pushed off the end of the rail if you loosen the two bolts, so it doesn't appear to be a fuel issue. Now we're convinced it's somehow related to the AFM because what else could it be?!

Note: Plugs are okay and were recently replaced, after this happened:

photo4_zpsf2910950.jpg

But it didn't start misbehaving until a while after I put new plugs in, so I don't think the issue is related to new plugs. (Replaced with standard NGK BKR6E's again)

With the fuel pump priming, I've never ever heard any noise upon turning the key to the on position, just assumed the pump was really quiet. But I just read on a DSM forum "No these cars do not have a prime cycle. The fuel pump only turns on while cranking and running." No idea if that's true or not, they were also talking about the coolant temp sensor going bad, but the GSR doesn't have one of those does it
