Hi Guys,

I'm looking at transplanting an RVR Hypergear engine top end onto my RWD Starion block.

I have tracked down an RVR hypergear engine.
I asked the seller if it had a front or rear CAS. The guy said did I want a rear or front CAS on it as he has both...and that you can place a plug over the rear.

Now I got some pics and it looks like it had a rear CAS.

Does anyone know if you can have either on these engines? ie change from front to rear and vice versa if you have all the hardware?

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,

Neil

The loom on my '94 SG na was for a cas on the rear of the head. The one I have just transplanted is from a '96 SSG and it had the cam and crank angle sensor on the front of the engine, but because my loom is for rear cas I just

used what would suit the wiring. Either setup will do the job

What type of plug/s is/are on your loom?

See if the guy has a loom to go with it, they usually throw in a loom if you're getting it from a front cut.

I have 2 spare lloms to suit, but I'll have to check if they are all there and haven't been harvested for wire.

I think there is 3 variations.
1- crank/cam sensor on the head ala vr4, evo 1-3
2- crank sensor at front of engine behind balancer, cam sensor under intake cam pulley. (7 bolt only)
3- crank sensor at front of crank behind balancer, cam sensor at gearbox end of head. (7 bolt only)

Number 2 is what you want, but afaik any 7 bolt will convert to no 2. I know the bolt holes are there for the crank sensor, but dunno about every head.

I would love a pic of no3 cam sensor if someone has?

Is the front sensor arrangement better than the one at the back of the head?

They are functionally the same. But the firewall is in the way for the rear mounted cas in a rwd car.
Id convert to front sensors rather than hack a firewall or move a engine forward

Pretty difficult to convert a 6 bolt to the front sensors tho.
It involves welding/tapping holes/bosses on the front cover and head

I plan on using an RVR/EVO3 head and I'll use the front cover that comes with it as I'll also be using the twin cam oil pump, pulleys, alternator, a/c, p/s and lower balance shaft.

But what block are you putting this on? 6 or 7 bolt? The 7bolt front cover will not go on a 6 bolt. The 7 bolt changed to accept the crank mounted sensor.

MIne has the crank angle sensor and cam angle sensor. I only know cause i snapped timing belt 'b' which turn smashed the crank angle sensor in half.

Will go through my photos and see if i took any of it. Was a mission and a half to find the non cranking problem.

So lucky that it didn't jam into your main tb and screw your motor completely

What do you think caused the failure? These should last at least 90,000 Km.

Still love the RVR but am paranoid about little noises

Here is no3:

Was on 97-99 2g in the states and maybe some rvr. It is cam position only. It looks same as the exhaust cam sensor housing on evo 4-9 but I cannot confirm if it is the same or not. It is said the sensor connector is same as evo9 intake sensor so a bit of a oddball but maybe other sensors may bolt in.

Looks exactly like the cam sensor housing on my HSGR

Crank sensor lives under the timing cover at the other end and looks at the crank sensing disc behind the cam drive sprocket

I will take a pic when I have finished painting my front room (or else I will be in strife)

I'm guessing they didn't know the other belt was there when the timing belt was done, and it wet past it's useby date.
