I have a C51PH in my car and a W5M332-NQZK in the shed. I'm going to rebuild one of them to go with my new engine. I've been trying to find info about the C51PH but it's thin on the ground.

Can anyone fill me in any any differences between the two, and any strengths or weaknesses?

My experience tells me that the C51 of has a different style 5th gear. Smaller count output shaft to the xfer case and can sometimes be switchable (fwd / awd).

Build the w5m33. Probably easier to find parts.

G'day.

I agree with Baz. I have rebuilt a C51PH in the past, Tim Zimmer helped me with shimming the bearings. Synchros are rare for the C51PH.

Couple of things to consider. I believe the W5M33 box is geared for a 3.909 final drive ratio and the C51 is geared for 3.545 final drive ratio. There was a post somewhere addressing a change of the drive shaft from the C51 to the transfer case to the W5M33 box. I have a C51 non-switchable box with an EVO 7 bolt engine, I had to rebuild the front engine mount as the EVO box actually has the engine mount, not the engine as in a VR4. I have an EVO rear diff in the shed but will need the 3.909 pinion and ring gear put back in it to use it with a W3M33 box and transfer case. I may be wrong and will no doubt be corrected. HAHAHAHA. Just build a W5m33 box. They come in both 3.5 and 3.909 ratios from factory.
The cp51 has much weaker 3rd/4th hub and slider from memory.

How much time do you spend in a parking lot with your performance car? If you do a lot of parking lot driving, and hang out in parking lots, chances are you are a ricer, go home and read import tuner. If you’re complaining about noise you should not be modifying your car. You should also consider no longer being a man, please hand in your genitals at the door.
