If its the balance shaft thats tied to the oil pump there is an inspection hole/bolt i believe in the side of the block you can see the end of it through. under intake manifold.

So, I pulled of top and middle timing cover and see that the timing belt is looser than my ex, and believe me I rode hard and often, so the tensioner is obviously not tensioning. Gotta rip the rest off and have a good look but I think I have a winner at least and finally...

That or youd be surprised how many people/workshops etc tension the belt wrong. Could be a number of factors

True mate. But at least I have something to work with now. Any tips on getting the crankshaft pulley off so I can get the lower timing cover off?

Given that it was done 7 years ago I can near be sure that it just had its time.... Oh, and tap tap tapperoo for the pulley worked. Too dark to get rest of timing cover off. The RVR is parked at the mechanics but he is happy for me to work in his yard over the weekend. What a guy!

Well, the timing kit didn't turn up until after lunch today. Grrrr.
Anyway, fit all up, hydraulic tensioner, pulleys and belt. And she lives again!!!!
Compression test still shows average around 180psi across all 4 (wet).
Happy to get away for that one.

My word mate. Could have just been a new head and pistons easily... I was took a peak with a camera to the pistons and couldn't see any markings so I got pretty excited then.
Btw, turned out to be the hydraulic tensioner shit itself. Changed it all anyway. Just in case anyone was wanting to know.

True Jamo. Not exactly a great time for RVR ownership at all. I hope the rest of the boys get some of my luck....
