I was doing a job for a guy the other day and as part of the work I checked the timing on his pretty much stock gsr...just an exhaust and pod. with the timing connector grounded ...to my surprise it was running way past 15 degrees. when I looked at the cas...it was fully advanced. So I set it back where it should be at around seven. Owner reported the car lost power...so we nudged it up a bit. it was a bit better and no ping. He drove it around for a day or so and advanced it back to where it was.

I would have thought it would ping its tits off but apparently not....

other than this it seems all ok

thoughts?  low compression....cas ...

not sure on that as you can usually still hear it ....say with ECMLITE I can hear it ping if there is too much advance. This thing is silent..

I once did a VR4 for a guy that must've had the harmonic balancer replaced from another model or something as the TDC mark on the balancer was about 80deg off the mark. Verfified against another balancer.

Another VR4 I just did was the opposite of what you had. I had to advance the CAS all the way just to get 5deg BTDC. The CAS was installed correctly. Stumped me. I just left it for the fact that the base timing was correct, even though the CAS was full tilt. On my cars I've found that having the CAS mid way was around spot on.

Agree. Balancer has walked.
Would be interesting to line up cam marks and see where balancer is

I did that.. First VR4 was out by ~80deg. The balancer looked new, so rubber was good etc.

Second VR4 I lined it up and it was spot on... but anyway.. don't wanna hijack the thread.

So maybe a ce 1.8 balancer is different marks.

I would be checking also that the crank sprocket keyway hasn't been flogged out from a loose sprocket bolt.... This would affect the valve timing relative to TDC, and consequently the position of the CAS relative to actual TDC. verify the TDC marker is actually at TDC, and confirm the cam sprocket isn't out by a tooth. It's super easy to "think" the cam sprocket is in the correct position, when in reality it's out by a tooth. I have corrected many workshops cam timing after a cambelt replacement or a cylinder head R&R. Just saying ....

thankyou for your concern.

does a ce have a 1.8 g93?
Is it possible that the ce balancer fits (I assume its a cc we are talking about)?
Is it possible that the tdc mark is different?

I think so....
powerbond on ebay list a few different options for g93/g94 balancers. Im sure some of them have tdc marks in different spots.

I think its a worthwhile thing to paintpen a line from the inner to the outer on a balancer. When doing a belt or checking something. Ie when you are sure you have tdc, confirm the balancer mark is correct and mark the inner so you know if it moves.
To long with holden 6 cylinders. They are notorious for walking the balancers.
also used to engineering chalk a line on holdon axles. 3 full turns and its time to throw them before they snap off in the diff centre.
